Worked examples

Example 1: You need 3 cubic yards of pea gravel (1.40 t/cu yd). → 3 × 1.40 = 4.20 tons

Example 2: Your supplier delivers in tons. You need to cover 200 sq ft at 3” with crushed stone. → Volume = 200 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.85 cu yd → 1.85 × 1.40 = 2.59 tons (order 3 tons)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert cubic yards to tons?

Multiply cubic yards by the material density in tons per cubic yard. For example, 3 cubic yards of crushed stone (1.40 t/cu yd) = 3 × 1.40 = 4.20 tons.

How many cubic yards are in 1 ton of gravel?

For gravel or crushed stone at 1.40 t/cu yd, 1 ton = 0.71 cubic yards. For heavier crushed limestone at 1.50 t/cu yd, 1 ton = 0.67 cubic yards.

Is cubic yards or tons a better way to order gravel?

Suppliers usually sell by the ton because material is weighed at the plant. Cubic yards are useful for calculating how much space the material will fill. Our calculator works in both.

Do sand, gravel, and topsoil convert at the same rate?

No — each material has a different density. Gravel is 1.35–1.50 t/cu yd; topsoil is about 1.10 t/cu yd; sand is 1.30–1.35 t/cu yd. Always use the correct material density for your conversion.
